"Want to prevent or solve bullying? Teach conflict management skills."
- Kathleen Hilchey
Hi, I’m Kathleen Hilchey, the owner of Third Way Conflict Specialists.
I’m a bullying and conflict specialist with simple solutions for families, schools, and anyone who works with kids. My team and I work with teens, parents, educators, mental health professionals and camp counsellors to find the root cause of bullying, and give them the skills they need to resolve it once and for all.
Why I’m dedicated to solving bullying
I grew up in a household that endured the traumatic side effects of bullying. Both my mom and my brother were severely bullied during their school years, and even as a small child, I saw just how devastating — and far-reaching — bullying can become.
I’m a fixer, and an empath, and the more I learned about bullying, the more I realised that most anti-bullying “solutions” just make the problem worse. I became a teacher, and earned my Masters Degree in Education with a focus on aggression, bullying, and peacebuilding. I worked with hundreds of children, families and schools on complex bullying cases, and along the way, I discovered a simple approach to bullying that works every time.
Our Philosophy: Teach people the skills, end the bullying
We believe bullying is a problem that reaches far beyond a moment of aggression. It creates a ripple effect through families, schools and communities, and if left unresolved, it can leave long-term emotional and psychological damage. But we also believe that teaching people the skills they need to handle conflict is how we can collectively put an end to bullying. In our work, we rely on a proven framework to end bullying, known as Cooperative Conflict Coaching. Our approach gives children, educators and counsellors the skills and techniques they need to deal with bullying, no matter how it presents.
Our approach
We understand that with better conflict management skills, bullying can’t thrive. This means we do work in 2 areas:
1. Equip those who work with kids and those who have kids with simple and effective ways to managing conflict. We know that when systems and families respond well to conflict, bullying can’t flourish.
2. We help children, teens, families resolve complex bullying cases.

If you or a child in your life is being bullied, you know how devastating it can be to the whole family. It can feel overwhelming, exhausting, and unsolvable — but the important thing to know is that it can be resolved. We work with children, teens, and their families and caregivers to uncover the root cause of bullying and get it to stop quickly and permanently.
What To Do If Your Child Is Being Bullied
If you need actionable advice to help your child right now, here’s my
advice for parents dealing with child bullying.
Education system
If you work in a school setting, you’ve seen bullying and inter-student conflict up close. You know how complicated and persistent it can be. We work with teachers, administrators, therapists and social workers within the education system. Our goal is to give you tools and frameworks for working with kids, families, and other members of staff to achieve a positive resolution to both student conflict and bullying situations.
Mental health professionals
Since you work one-on-one with children, you know how much wisdom, empathy and insight can come from even the youngest of them. But the problem with the way most adults deal with bullying is that they leave no room for the voice of the child. Our Cooperative Conflict Coaching is designed for mental health professionals — including school counsellors, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and therapists — who know that bullying is one of the toughest challenges facing our children today.
Camp counsellors
Camp can be a life-changing experience for children and teens, but it’s also a place where conflict and bullying can easily escalate. With my 10 years of experience as a camp counsellor, program director, and director, my team and I have developed anti-bullying methods that help campers (and counsellors) resolve conflict confidently and kindly.
About
As a parent, a sibling, a former teacher and a conflict specialist, I know what bullying looks like from all angles, and I know the ripple effect it creates through families, schools, and communities. I’ve spent a decade as a teacher in the Ontario school system, and several years studying aggression, bullying and peacebuilding techniques in an academic setting.
Through my studies and my work with families and educators around the world, I’ve developed simple tools and frameworks that resolve conflicts and bring an end to bullying.
